Make Firefox Faster by Vacuuming Your Database

Firefox tip: Firefox 3.0's Awesome Bar added all kinds of features to the 'fox, but unfortunately it's also created some performance issues—for example, by upping the default history time, leading to larger, fragmented databases. This quick hack speeds things up.

All-things-Firefox weblog Mozilla Links previously detailed how to defragment SQLite databases with a vacuum command, but the whole process was a bit clumsy, and it required a restart. Now they've updated the technique with a simple bit of code you can run inside Firefox's Error Console that requires no restart.

  • Open the Error Console: Tools menu/Error Console
  • In the Code text box paste this (it's a single line):

    Components.classes["@mozilla.org/browser/nav-history-service;1"].getService(Components.interfaces.nsPIPlacesDatabase).DBConnection.executeSimpleSQL("VACUUM");

  • Press Evaluate. All the UI will freeze for a few seconds while databases are VACUUMed

Once the process is complete, you should notice a big improvement in performance, especially when using the Awesome Bar to search for a web site. While you're tweaking away, you may also want to take a look at how you can speed up Firefox by limiting your history size.

The top 100 most dangerous websites for your PC enlisted

http://www.websecurityguard.com/cms/imgfolder/illustration-dangerous-webs.jpg

Melbourne, Aug 20 (ANI): Internet security company Norton Symantec has come up with a list of Top 100 Dirtiest sites, which could infect your computer with malware.

Malware is a software that can damage or compromise a computer system without the owner's consent.

Natalie Connor, spokeswoman of the anti-virus company, said that even visiting any of the named websites could expose a computer to infection and put the personal information into the hands of unwanted people.

"What people don't realise is when you type in a website, you're bringing down information on a page and with it could be malware," News.com.au quoted her as saying.

The list was compiled with the help of global data collected on Norton Safe Web, a site that analysed websites' security risks.

The infected sites had on average 18,000 threats and 40 per cent of the sites had more than 20,000 threats, while 75 per cent of websites on the list were found to be spreading malware for over six months.

According to Connor, most websites in the list had adult content with unprintable names, suggesting they contained hardcore pornography.

Some others sites include those on ice skating, deer hunting, catering and legal services.

Hackers can apparently obtain personal information using keystroke-logging software from both PCs and Mac computers.he reps said that hackers are a force to reckon with as cyber crime is increasing rapidly.

She added: "The last thing we want to do is scare people, we want to educate them so they know how to protect themselves.

"It's not about the fame any more of creating viruses and getting in the media. They're making money."

Norton released a sample of the dirtiest websites:

How To Know Who Blocked You in Google Talk

who-blocked-me-gtalk

Whenever you noticed a contact in your Gtalk/Google Talk has not been online for some time, have it ever crossed your mind you’ve been blocked? If you are curious in finding out who actually blocked you in Gtalk, here’s a workaround you can try.

This following method we attempt to show make use of a chat client call Pidgin.

1. Download, Install Pidgin

Click here to download Pidgin chat client. If you already have Pidgin installed, you may skip this step.

2. Configure Pidgin for Gtalk

You’ll probably start with the below screen. Click the Add button. "Accounts -> Manage Account" will also bring you to the same screen. Let’s add Gtalk to Pidgin.

Clicking Add will allow you to add new Gtalk account. The following two screenshots show what you need to fill up for Basic and Advance tab, pay attention to those highlighted.

With all the settings properly entered, you should be able to connect to Gtalk and load your contacts successfully. Now let’s go find out who blocked you.

3. Who’s Blocking You?

When someone blocked you in Gtalk (and other IMs), they appear offline just like your other contacts who are really offline. Right click, click on Get Info, and we’ll see how to differentiate them.

The following image is a comparison of 2 different contacts: Actual offline (left) and Blocked offline (right). If you are blocked, nothing will be display under Buddy Information.

9 Alternative Ways To Access Blocked Sites

nofsmycopy.jpg friendster myspace ban image by myadlan

Is you school, college or office blocking you from getting on social network sites like Friendster, Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, Hi5, Orkut, etc? Here’s few ways you can bypass the restrictions and surf like normal, but please check with your local authorities before using them. We will not held any responsibility if you’ve breach the regulations of any.

Full list after jump.

  1. Using IP Instead of URL

This depends on the software/application used. Sometimes blocked sites are stored as a list of URLs (eg. www.yahoo.com, www.donwload.com,etc) and typing the IP instead of the URL might sometimes work. In a local computer, doing a ping domain.com command in Command Prompt (Mac users use Terminal) will return you the IP address. You can also do it online via www.whatsmyip.org

  2. Redirection with Short URL service

Sometimes the URL you intend to browse might be ban, but converting them to another a shorter URL with short URL services might just help you to bypass the settings.

Here’s 2 Short URL service we’ve previously mentioned – MooURL, SnipURL

  3. Google Cache

Search engines like Google and Yahoo cache webpages and these cached pages are stored in search engines themselves, which likely will be added to the blocked list. Click on the ‘cache’ will bring you to a cache version of the page, as updated as how Google caches it.

  4. Internet Archive – Wayback Machine

Wayback Machine is a internet service that periodically keeps a copy of almost all websites in the Internet way from the date they’re started. Clicking on the latest copy of what Wayback Machine have should be somewhat similar to the real site. Another way to access blocked sites via caches.

  5. Anonymous Surfing

Some site allows you to take advantage of their proxy or domain to surf other sites as anonymous. Here’s 90+ proxy websites we’ve previously mentioned.

More anonymous surfing services: 90+ Proxy Websites To Access Blocked Websites

  6. Use Proxy in Browsers

There are tons of sites out there that distributes free proxies of almost any country. Here’s an example. Check out the following methods on how/where to insert proxies in your web browsers.

    Proxy Surfing – Firefox

Under Advanced tab, select Network tab, then click inside Connection Settings. Select Manual proxy configuration, put proxy under HTTP proxy.

    Proxy Surfing – Internet Explorer

Go to Tools -> Internet Options. Select Connections tab. Click into LAN Settings, check Proxy Server. Insert your proxy URL inside Address.

  7. Bypass with Translations services

Online translation services like AltaVista BabelFish, Google Translate allows you to translate a website from one language to another and display the translated results on their own page. The trick here is to enter the URL (website you’re blocked), retranslate it even if you don’t need to and let Google or AltaVista fetch you the content.

  8. Subscribe to RSS Feed

This might not work for all sites, but if the site you intended to visit provides RSS feeds, you can subscribe and read it with a RSS reader, or have it regularly send the contents to your email

  9. Retrieve web pages via Email

Web2Mail is a free service that sends websites you want to read right into your inbox. All you need to do is send an email to www@web2mail.com with the URL as subject title.

1. MagMyPic

How can anyone not include this? One of the earliest sites to offer custom image effects on your own images. KnowEm : Checks the availability of user name on 120 popular Social Media websites

KnowEm is the latest in services that check for unclaimed user names at multiple social sites. This is helpful if you're interested in retaining the same user name at sites you haven't yet signed up for, or if you're on the verge of launching a new site or service and want to lock down that brand name before someone else does.

Most recently we checked out Namechk, which does the same thing for 84 different sites. KnowEm steps it up by searching in 120 places, as well as offering a premium service which will actually go to each site and sign you up. This doesn't come cheap though; it's $64.95, and it only goes to the sites where the user name is still available. It then sends the log-in information back to you so you can do things like change the password and where it's sending confirmation e-mails.

What's more, is that for $10 a month it can keep signing you up for any new services it adds to its search engine. It promises anywhere from 6 to 10 per month, but that can change depending on what new sites are introduced during that time.

Is it worth it to place your money, and trust in a service like this? It depends on how fast the providers are at adding the new sites and registering for you. If you've got an eccentric, or otherwise uncommon user name then yes, it will probably still be available. However, for more common names, you're better off keeping an eagle eye on your RSS reader and signing up for new services as soon as they're announced.

KnowEm checks 120 different sites to find you open user names, and for a price can sign you up to all the places where that name is still available.

Browser battle gets fierce: IE 8 vs Chrome vs Firefox

http://themolitor.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/webbrowsers.jpg

What’s already in Chrome and Firefox, that’s also included in IE?

  • Website address highlighting- Similar to the brand new style in Chrome to make the web address more easily readable.
  • Addons- More than half of the Firefox users are still stuck to it because of the addons feature. Now IE 8 has 1700+ Addons available from the official website and more from others.
  • InPrivate Browsing- The name of Incognito browsing (Google Chrome) in IE.

What’s not in Firefox and Chrome but is in IE 8?

  • Similar Tab highlighting
  • Tab Crash Recovery(It’s needed a lot if you are running flash games etc. in your browser)
  • Compatibility view (to fit websites designed for older browsers in it)

What’s in Chrome and Firefox but NOT in IE 8?

  • One tab may lead to hang the whole browser. Unlike Google Chrome, if a ‘bad’ script runs in a tab of IE, the whole browser will hang. But the good news is, 90% of the times, it is recovered by Tab Crash Recovery(controlled by process named IEmonitor.exe)
  • If you’re on a slow connection, again, unlike most other browsers, IE may leave you with loading finished and Images not loaded. However, to show the images, you’ll have to right-click the frame and choose ‘Show Picture’.

Mozilla’s second alpha of Firefox 3.1 is upping the ante in the next-generation browser battle. So how do the main contenders stack up so far now? One thing’s for sure, the Firefox team has taken note of Google’s recent Chrome release and worked hard to make sure its offering can hold its own.

Mozilla had already claimed its 3.1 version could outperform Chrome when it comes to speed (and most independent tests show it at least tying). Now, the engineers have incorporated Chrome-initiated options such as the ability to drag and drop tabs in and out of browser windows. The second alpha release also adds support for the HTML 5 video tag , which gives Web developers expanded options for embedding video within a page. Don’t forget that Microsoft’s new Internet Explorer 8 beta 2 - released at the end of August and quickly eclipsed by Chrome’s introduction - is also vying for a piece of the pie.

Here’s a breakdown of the high and lowlights of each offering and where it stands as far as a full release.

Contender #1: Google Chrome

http://www.glazman.org/weblog/dotclear/public/google/google-chrome.jpg

The status:

Windows beta released on September 2. Mac OS X and Linux versions still under development and said to be coming soon. No indication of targeted full release date.

The good:
  • Reliability. Chrome’s multiprocess architecture makes a bad Web page less likely to take down the whole browser.
  • Speed. Chrome loads fast and keeps your surfing super-fast.
  • Simplicity. Its clean design wastes no screen space.
  • Searching. The Omnibox lets you type search terms or URLs into a single spot and figures out what you want.
  • Privacy. Chrome offers an “Incognito” mode that lets you easily leave no footprints from where you’ve been.
The bad:
  • Privacy. Chrome’s taken a lot of heat for its monitoring and collection of user data, some of which happens before you even hit enter.
  • Security. It didn’t take long for users to discover vulnerabilities

in the beta browser. Several of these have already been patched.

  • Reliability. Some sites and online services still don’t work with Chrome.
  • Consistency. Because Chrome is build on the WebKit system, it differs from the dominant platforms that most designers focus on.
  • Support. Chrome doesn’t yet have any add-ons or customization options available. It’s yet to be seen how these, once developed, will compare to the rich options available for Firefox.

Contender #2: Firefox 3.1

http://ww.dedoimedo.com/images/computers/2009/firefox-3-1-beta-logo.pngThe status:

Second alpha build released on September 5. Beta expected in the next month. Full release targeted for end of 2008.

The good:
  • Strong foundation. Mozilla’s already built a loyal following with Firefox, and it doesn’t intend on letting that go. With Firefox 3.1, you know you’ll have a powerful library of add-ons and support already at your fingertips, not to mention the slew of other assets unveiled in Firefox 3.0.
  • Speed. Mozilla says its still-under-development TraceMonkey JavaScript platform will leave Google’s V8 in the dust. The second alpha build revs things up, too, with added support for “Web workers” — a system that lets multiple scripts run as background processes.
  • Competitive edge. Mozilla’s developers have good reason to watch what Chrome is doing — and work to match it, if not one-up it.

The bad:
  • Security questions. Some studies — albeit, Microsoft-funded ones — have suggested Firefox, with its frequent new versions, is more susceptible to threats than the other options.
  • Crash potential. Unlike Chrome, Firefox does not have separate environments for each tab — so one rogue page can still take the whole program down.
  • Support. Firefox has worked hard to snag a small portion of the browser market share, and most early predictions show Chrome taking away more of its userbase than IE’s.
  • Google’s focus on Chrome will also take away some of its previous focus on Mozilla’s development efforts. Will Firefox be able to remain a key player in the browser war?

Contender #3: Internet Explorer 8

http://i385.photobucket.com/albums/oo298/24imagehosting/Buzz99/Internet-Explorer-8.jpgThe status:

Second beta released on August 27. Full release expected before the end of 2008.

The good:
  • Support. Love it or hate it, Internet Explorer is hanging on to about three-quarters of the browsing market with its default status in all Windows machines. You know developers and designers are going to cater to it.
  • Security. With Microsoft at its helm, IE hangs on to a reputation of safe and reliable browsing.
  • Privacy. IE 8 was the first to offer a no-record browsing mode, branded here as InPrivate Browsing.
  • Searching. IE 8’s Smart Address Bar offers similar functionality to Chrome’s Omnibox, letting you type in URLs or search terms and taking you to the right place.
  • Added add-ons. IE 8 finally catches up to Firefox with a new “Gallery” full of third-party add-on options.
The bad:

That’s the lowdown on the battle’s current status. Remember, all three of these programs are still early in their development, so many of the pluses and minuses could change as things move forward. One thing’s for sure, though: This battle is on, it’s growing fierce, and each of its contenders will do anything it can to win.

Browsers have arguably become more important than the underlying OS in the modern, connected world.

So, take note when Microsoft announces an update to the Web-dominating software favored by your IT department. Microsoft says it’ll release its much anticipated Internet Explorer 8 software to the world. Out of beta, Steve Ballmer claims that IE 8, “gets people to the information they need, fast, and provides protection that no other browser can match.” Time will tell, eh?

Opera stands nowhere between, though I’ve used all the four [IE8, Firefox 3.0, Chrome & Opera 10] and this is the ranking I give to these browsers on the basis of speed, performance, security and stability…

  1. IE 10 beta(Tab recovery, more stable, draws with or beats firefox in speed, superb security)
  2. Mozilla Firefox(less stable, consumes a large amount of RAM, yet on no. 2 because of wide range of Addons, highly customizability and enough security)
  3. Opera 10(Opera turbo increasing speed upto 3x, but Opera 10 beta still with bugs and wont support CSS3)
  4. Google Chrome( Clean stunning looks, No addons supported, not customizable, IE 10 beats Chrome in speed, not secure at all)

IE is one step ahead of firefox, though Firefox 3.1 will be far better than Firefox 3.0. That’s what Mozilla officials say. Again, time will tell!

HOW TO: Manage Multiple Social Media Profiles

http://skreened.com/product-image/v2w160h210/erazikaagakuldehabje/my-way-all-day-social-networking-sites.jpgmultiplesocialmediasites

Start counting the number of social media websites you have a profile with, right now. Out of fingers yet? Facebook (Facebook), Twitter (Twitter), Flickr (Flickr), and YouTube (YouTube) are just the start of it – for people active on social websites, you could have several dozen social media profiles, half of them using a really old picture of you. Heck, some of them probably have inboxes filled with strange messages from some girl named “Leota” who wants you to visit her sexy singles website.

While inbox spam and old pictures may not be the end of the world, keeping up a consistent image across the web and keeping your content fresh is vital to good business and strong relationships. With a little upfront effort, the task of maintaining multiple profiles can be less tedious, freeing up time to better connect with other people.

Step 1. Understand your Current Position

The first step is to exactly know where you have a social media profile and where you do not. Start by checking with Check User Names, which will search dozens of popular social media websites to see if your username is active. Check any you normally use. If any don’t ring any bells, see if it’s yours or if somebody already owns.

Tip: Always keep note of other people using your most common username. Making sure people don’t confuse you for somebody else is important for friends and potential employers alike.

Step 2. Choose Your Platforms Realistically

People may disagree with me, but I believe you should sign up for the most popular social networks regardless of whether you are going to use them all. This prevents someone else being mistaken for you and protects an account that you may want to use later.

This doesn’t mean you should be active on all of these services. Take a long, hard look at all of the services available and your time constraints and choose the ones that pique your interest the most. Keep some focus when choosing platforms. For the rest, place a note on your profile with contact information and links to your favorite social profiles.

Step 3. Organize!

This is the most important step! Don’t be satisfied with a disarray of bookmarks and email notifications. Organize a bookmarks folder or two for the social media services you are using. Filter your email so that all of your notifications fall into their own inbox/label. Schedule time to log into these accounts and make sure they are in order.

Tip: The most important thing to remember is to find a system and stick to it. These are the profiles that need your attention consistently; keep them free of spam and outdated information.

Step 4. Automate and Combine Your Profiles

No, I am not suggesting using a bot or having autoresponders. Instead, I am talking about grouping similar tasks together. One of the most common actions on social media is sending an update that you have updated your blog. Normally, you would have to copy and paste this type of message into Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace (MySpace), not to mention Plurk (Plurk), Brightkite (Brightkite), or FriendFeed (FriendFeed).

However, with services such as Ping.fm (Ping.Fm) and Twitterfeed, this can be done without any work on your end. Find tools that can help you spread you reach without eating up your time.

Tip: Atomkeep is a cool tool for updating all of your social media profiles at once – it connects to your Twitter, LinkedIn (LinkedIn), Facebook, and other accounts and allows you to change bios and profile pictures with one action.

Step 5. Keep it Fresh

It’s easy to tell if someone has abandoned an account and left it to grow weeds. If you intend to use a service, keep adding new content! You can’t expect to meet new people on Digg (Digg) or Stumbleupon (StumbleUpon) accounts without digging or stumbling. And it can be confusing for other people if your profile has an old email address or says you’re still in a relationship with your high school sweetheart.

Tip: Use a Firefox (Firefox) extension like Shareaholic to help make adding new content to your profile easier.

Go Forth and Network!

Once you’re organized and understand where you really want to spend your time, managing multiple social media profiles becomes less of a chore and more about sharing experiences, discovering new content, and building new relationships. That is why you made these profiles in the first place, right?
