Make Firefox Faster by Vacuuming Your Database

Firefox tip: Firefox 3.0's Awesome Bar added all kinds of features to the 'fox, but unfortunately it's also created some performance issues—for example, by upping the default history time, leading to larger, fragmented databases. This quick hack speeds things up.

All-things-Firefox weblog Mozilla Links previously detailed how to defragment SQLite databases with a vacuum command, but the whole process was a bit clumsy, and it required a restart. Now they've updated the technique with a simple bit of code you can run inside Firefox's Error Console that requires no restart.

  • Open the Error Console: Tools menu/Error Console
  • In the Code text box paste this (it's a single line):

    Components.classes["@mozilla.org/browser/nav-history-service;1"].getService(Components.interfaces.nsPIPlacesDatabase).DBConnection.executeSimpleSQL("VACUUM");

  • Press Evaluate. All the UI will freeze for a few seconds while databases are VACUUMed

Once the process is complete, you should notice a big improvement in performance, especially when using the Awesome Bar to search for a web site. While you're tweaking away, you may also want to take a look at how you can speed up Firefox by limiting your history size.

How To Know Who Blocked You in Google Talk

who-blocked-me-gtalk

Whenever you noticed a contact in your Gtalk/Google Talk has not been online for some time, have it ever crossed your mind you’ve been blocked? If you are curious in finding out who actually blocked you in Gtalk, here’s a workaround you can try.

This following method we attempt to show make use of a chat client call Pidgin.

1. Download, Install Pidgin

Click here to download Pidgin chat client. If you already have Pidgin installed, you may skip this step.

2. Configure Pidgin for Gtalk

You’ll probably start with the below screen. Click the Add button. "Accounts -> Manage Account" will also bring you to the same screen. Let’s add Gtalk to Pidgin.

Clicking Add will allow you to add new Gtalk account. The following two screenshots show what you need to fill up for Basic and Advance tab, pay attention to those highlighted.

With all the settings properly entered, you should be able to connect to Gtalk and load your contacts successfully. Now let’s go find out who blocked you.

3. Who’s Blocking You?

When someone blocked you in Gtalk (and other IMs), they appear offline just like your other contacts who are really offline. Right click, click on Get Info, and we’ll see how to differentiate them.

The following image is a comparison of 2 different contacts: Actual offline (left) and Blocked offline (right). If you are blocked, nothing will be display under Buddy Information.

9 Alternative Ways To Access Blocked Sites

nofsmycopy.jpg friendster myspace ban image by myadlan

Is you school, college or office blocking you from getting on social network sites like Friendster, Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, Hi5, Orkut, etc? Here’s few ways you can bypass the restrictions and surf like normal, but please check with your local authorities before using them. We will not held any responsibility if you’ve breach the regulations of any.

Full list after jump.

  1. Using IP Instead of URL

This depends on the software/application used. Sometimes blocked sites are stored as a list of URLs (eg. www.yahoo.com, www.donwload.com,etc) and typing the IP instead of the URL might sometimes work. In a local computer, doing a ping domain.com command in Command Prompt (Mac users use Terminal) will return you the IP address. You can also do it online via www.whatsmyip.org

  2. Redirection with Short URL service

Sometimes the URL you intend to browse might be ban, but converting them to another a shorter URL with short URL services might just help you to bypass the settings.

Here’s 2 Short URL service we’ve previously mentioned – MooURL, SnipURL

  3. Google Cache

Search engines like Google and Yahoo cache webpages and these cached pages are stored in search engines themselves, which likely will be added to the blocked list. Click on the ‘cache’ will bring you to a cache version of the page, as updated as how Google caches it.

  4. Internet Archive – Wayback Machine

Wayback Machine is a internet service that periodically keeps a copy of almost all websites in the Internet way from the date they’re started. Clicking on the latest copy of what Wayback Machine have should be somewhat similar to the real site. Another way to access blocked sites via caches.

  5. Anonymous Surfing

Some site allows you to take advantage of their proxy or domain to surf other sites as anonymous. Here’s 90+ proxy websites we’ve previously mentioned.

More anonymous surfing services: 90+ Proxy Websites To Access Blocked Websites

  6. Use Proxy in Browsers

There are tons of sites out there that distributes free proxies of almost any country. Here’s an example. Check out the following methods on how/where to insert proxies in your web browsers.

    Proxy Surfing – Firefox

Under Advanced tab, select Network tab, then click inside Connection Settings. Select Manual proxy configuration, put proxy under HTTP proxy.

    Proxy Surfing – Internet Explorer

Go to Tools -> Internet Options. Select Connections tab. Click into LAN Settings, check Proxy Server. Insert your proxy URL inside Address.

  7. Bypass with Translations services

Online translation services like AltaVista BabelFish, Google Translate allows you to translate a website from one language to another and display the translated results on their own page. The trick here is to enter the URL (website you’re blocked), retranslate it even if you don’t need to and let Google or AltaVista fetch you the content.

  8. Subscribe to RSS Feed

This might not work for all sites, but if the site you intended to visit provides RSS feeds, you can subscribe and read it with a RSS reader, or have it regularly send the contents to your email

  9. Retrieve web pages via Email

Web2Mail is a free service that sends websites you want to read right into your inbox. All you need to do is send an email to www@web2mail.com with the URL as subject title.

‘A Picture Speaks a Thousand Words,’ so goes the famous saying. Images bring the creativity of its authors out in the open. Artists use many image editors, one famous example being Adobe Photoshop. But editing images and adding special effects to images is not that simple thing to do. So here are the top 4 sites to add effects to images and get stunning results.

1. MagMyPic

The site currently boasts of more than  100 designs or ready-made templates. One special feature of this site is that some effects require your face to appear properly. For this the site has implemented face recognition technology. Pretty neat! Visit it at http://www.photofunia.com/

3. BeFunky

Originally started as a site to cartoonize your image, or add a cartoonish effect to your pictures, it now has 9 effects that include the cartoonizer (cartoon effect), inkify (drawn with ink), scribbler (pencil effect) and many more.  The most special feature of this site is that all of the image editing happens inside a flash application. Visit it at http://www.befunky.com/

4. WriteOnIt

writeonit

A relatively new entrant into the field of image editing, this site offers the option of putting our slogans on pre-taken images. That is you get the template wherein a person is holding a placard. In this placard you can fill the slogan of your choice. Other effects include  magazine covers, background-images and putting your face on a celebrity’s body (Face in Hole mode.) These four are my personal best’s. I’ve used it over and over and it still amazes me. Do you know of any more such sites?

3D Analyzer:Play Games without graphics card (or low configured cards)

http://www.einslive.de/multimedia/service/2008/img/gamer_dpa_g.jpg

"Graphics card must have pixel shader ability of 1.1 or greater for program to run."

or

The brand new game you just bought launches, but gives you a black screen and nothing else ? Or maybe you can hear some sounds but no video ?

Have this ever happened to You ? Ah Well If Yes,then you are stuck like me (period) ,just like you I too don't have a proper graphics solution (read:onboard graphics) or if you do have, you are having a primitive card. Well, here comes our savior from Tommti systems - The 3D Analyzer Tool. 3D analyzer was created and refined to overcome limitations posed by modern 3D Games and other Applications on several current mainstream 3D Cards.

3D Analyzer sort of "Tricks" your system into thinking it has a Nvidia, or even ATI graphics card! Of course, your games and applications will run in the mode they usually will (with the default graphics and such). If you have an Intel like me, you can now play games like "Devil May Cry 3", “The Witcher”, “Resident Evil 4” and or any new gen games which earlier demanded of graphics card.I played my Favorites using it and I m thoroughly satisfied with this tool. You can fiddle with various options to mess with it,and get different games to work with.

I played "Prince Of Persia-Sands of Time" which earlier never ran on my PC,and thrashed some demons in "Devil may Cry 3",killed ganados in RE4 and even ran Hitman Blood and money with it. In all forms, I m thoroughly satisfied with it and recommended it to you,If you are low on money like me (sarcasm again..).

What to do when Windows XP crashes & restarts automatically?

Sometimes Windows XP may encounter a problem such that it will crash immediately due to Cache or other windows files problems and will restart automatically. The main cause for this problem is due to Windows File, which keeps running your system, gets a sudden critical error and Windows XP crashes and restarts.

Some may think formatting their HardDrive and reinstalling Windows XP will help, but this may be time consuming, so I better recommend you to do the following steps:

Fix 1:

During every proper shut down of Windows XP it will generally take a proper backup of all the files that are related to Windows XP and other important files. So if your PC fails in rebooting Windows XP next time you can restore those files.
This can be done by Pressing the F8 key during Windows ReBoot and then Choose “Restore last known good settings that previously worked”

Safe Mode

If the above step does not work try this one.

Fix 2:

This problem can also be fixed by this step by using Windows XP system restore Utility.
Now do the same step ad done before during ReBoot of your PC that is pressing the F8 Key during Windows ReBoot but now choose the “Safe Mode” and press Enter

pick-safe-mode

Safe Mode of windows helps in Disabling all the Windows XP Startup programs which will automatically run during normal startup.
So now after Logging into Windows XP using Safe Mode then now

  • Goto “Start” the click “RUN”
  • Type “msconfig” [without quotes]
  • Click on “Lanuch System restore”  and click “Next”

msconfig

  • Click “Restore my system to an earlier time”
  • Now Click “Next” and on the window chooses a Restore Point and Click Next
  • Now your Windows will reboot and launch the system restores and all the windows file will be now restored which as it is before.

Fix 3:

The third Fix for this error is using an another OS which will help in finding the suspicious files.
Install a Live Linux like Ubuntu
Now Find the suspicious files which are not allowing the Windows to boot files to load.

Fix 4:

This is the final fix i know that is My inserting the Windows XP installation Disk and then Choose “Perform Additional tasks” and from that choose “Repair” to Fix the Windows Errors.
perform-additional-tasks

If you still get the same problem just try Formatting and Reinstalling, if there is any Corrupt or Missing Windows Files it can be still repaired using Windows MS-DOS facility.

If you have any other methods other than the above drop a comment let us know.

The truth about Virtual or Swap Memory

A lot has been said about how virtual memory increases system performance. After RAM, people often suggest the second best way to get a speed boost is to increase the size of pagefile.sys. Its time for debunking some myths about virtual memory.

Here are a few false beliefs about virtual memory

  1. More is better.
  2. Setting a static swap file size will make virtual memory more effective.
  3. Emptying the Pagefile will increase system performance.

All of these are false!!!!

What is virtual memory?

Without turning this into a lecture on Operating Systems, I’ll explain what Virtual memory is all about and keep it brief.hdd Virtual memory is a technique which gives an application program the impression that it has contiguous working memory, while in fact it may be physically fragmented and may even overflow on to disk storage.

Now, lets say I have 512MB RAM and running Adobe Photoshop and Firefox simultaneously. On wndows XP, assuming 200MB is already allocated to the kernal, the user applications i.e Photoshop and Firefox are left with 300 MB of space. Firefox will run smoothly while you’ll notice lag while working with photoshop.

This is due to pagefaults which occur when the required amount of RAM is insufficient and data needs to be fetched from the hard disk. Firefox can accomodate itself well within 300MB of RAM but for photoshop it isnt a sweet deal. Thats where virtual memory kicks in, the OS reserves some portion of the hard disk as memory, hence the name virtual. As HDD space is higher than RAM, programs  use virtual address ranges which in total exceed the amount of real memory.

Problem with virtual memory

As the memory available for the system increases, you’d expect the performance to increase. To a certain extent it does help but as read/write speeds of electromagnetic HDD are very slow compared to the semiconductor based RAM, it doesnt help even page file increases twice the size of your main memory. Simply put, having over 1.5 GB of pagefile for 512 MB RAM is not benefitial.

Now adays, RAM has become very inexpensive and 4GB RAM in dual channel is very common. I prefer to disable page file as it saves me unnecessary read writes cycles on the HDD while also conserving my laptop battery. 4GB of memory is enough for most people and disabling the page file has given be better results. It even has long term benefits as it prevents undue HDD activity and increases its life.

Best way to enable virtual memory

  • If you do not plan to upgrade to 4GB memory, then you can still make the best of your page file, by keeping it in a separate Hard drive altogether, the read write headers are spared of the extra overhead as pagefaults are dealt with in the other hard drive.
  • Never, keep the pagefile in a different partition than that of Windows in the same HDD. Meaning, if you have only one hard disk then you should keep the pagefile in the same partition as that of Windows and not a different partition of the same hard drive as many people believe. As, doing so results in the read/write heads requiring to travel large distances spanning partitions back and forth!

I hope this mini guide on virtual memory help the readers. :-)

Simple Home Remedies To Save Your Expensive Gadgets!

Gadgets

Our life is full of gadgets. We can’t live without them.  There are times when your gadgets stop working because of some faults. Ever thought of some ideas that can help you repair these gadgets with the use of simple home remedies? Well, here are some, but, mind you, none of them come with 100% scientific guarantee. But they work! Take a look!

Rescue your cell from water

Cell Phone slashing into water

You always try to protect your cell from not going into water, but atleast once in its lifetime, it finds its way into water. That’s a very sad moment. But does this mean that it’s time to abandon your cell phone? No! Especially not if you try this home remedy.

  • First of all, take out the phone battery from the cell immediately. This will prevent electrical short circuits within the cell which can even burn the internal parts of your cell.
  • Cell Phone in Uncooked Rice

Next, gently wipe your cell with a tissue, and bury it into a jar full of uncooked rice. Yes, rice! Remember that the coconut is kept in dry rice to keep moisture away? It’s the same logic that works here too. It has been found that rice has a high chemical affinity for water. In simple words, it attracts water. So, water doesn’t stick to the cold metal of your cell, instead it is soaked by the rice, thus leaving your cell dry (well, almost dry). That’s awesome remedy, isn’t it?

Extend laptop battery

Most common problem with laptops is that that its battery runs out when you need it. So these are simple tricks to improve your laptop’s battery life.

  • Remove the battery from your laptop when you are using the AC power. This reduces the constant re-charging of the battery. Maintaining the battery at full charge for extended periods can shorten its life.
  • It’s a good idea to remove the charger cord frequently if you are lazy to remove the battery and fix it back into the laptop — at least once a week.
  • A similar trick  works for your iPod too. If your iPod’s battery refuses to charge completely, make the battery completely dry. Next, simply take out the battery from the iPod and leave it outside for 24 hours. Plug it back in and notice the difference.

Print with dried cartridge ink

Canon Printer

If your printer’s ink dries out just when you are in the middle of printing an important document, simply take out the cartridge from the printer and run a hair dryer for three to four minutes and place it back into the printer and print again while it is still warm. Experts say that the hair dryer melts the thick ink inside the cartridge, thus releasing some extra ink for a page or two. Another good one!

Revive your dead hard drive

Hard Disk Drive (HDD)

If you have been hit by the blue screen of death (on your computer) — and the hard drive just crashed — don’t panic! You might be able to retrieve your precious data. The trick is that simply freeze the hard drive for an entire night.
This might sound silly, but the logic is that, many hard drive failures are caused by worn parts that no longer fit with each other, making it impossible for the computer to read from the drive. If you freeze the drive for an entire night, lowering the temperature causes its metal and plastic internals to contract slightly. Thawing it will cause those parts to expand again, and possibly, they will bind with each other. This might not bring the drive back to its life essentially, but give you enough time to transfer your precious data to a safe place. Worth a try, right?

Test Effectiveness of Your Antivirus using EICAR String

BTE1840

We have seen many posts on the  anti virus and people always give there opinion about there choice of the best anti virus. Though I have not seen anyone talking about method to check the effectiveness of your anti virus.

The best way to check the effectiveness is by getting some file from some infected PC into your system but the question is are you willing to take that risk? of course I will never take that risk.

Here is the simple code ( TEST string) copy and paste it on a notepad file and save it. If your anti virus detect it as a virus or threat that will confirm you about the effectiveness of the anti virus.

X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*

This is how my antivirus detected the notepad file as virus.

This is one of the best way to check the effectiveness of your anti virus as you don’t have to risk the security of your system. This is EICAR TEST string.

Check Who is Invisible/Online on Yahoo Messenger!

img_3240_yahoo_messenger

One of my Yahoo friend asked me how to check if a person is online on yahoo messenger? I googled for sometime and here are my tested results…

First let me tell you coolest thing about hacks in this tutorial. They do not require targeted yahoo user to be on your friend list! Now..

To Check Online Status:

This will work only if user is online and NOT into invisible mode. Invisible part is covered later… smile_regular

First Official Way: Go to Yahoos profile directory and check target user profile. Say you want to check status of someone (where someone is Yahoo ID). Now suffix someone to URL http://profiles.yahoo.com/ so it will become http://profiles.yahoo.com/someone. Open final URL in browser and the profile will have status indicator!

Another Way: There are many simple sites which takes Yahoo ID and returns status of Yahoo user. I have tested http://www.blockstatus.com/yahoo/status-checker successfully!

This part is not a hack but official Yahoo feature documented here.

If you want PHP code to create a status-checker page of your own, this page may help you.

To Check Invisible Status:

I tested and used a third-party program named Buddy-Spy! Unlike above this requires a Yahoo account. I strongly discourage using your own Yahoo ID. You better create a new one! smile_devil

Following is a screenshot of my test result, which says everything.

yahoo-visible

Also point to note is that I was not in friend-list of Yahoo account used for testing! smile_teeth
